Visa Information

You may be aware that not all people wishing to travel to the UK require visas or other forms of entry clearance. An excellent web site to determine whether you need to apply for a visa can be found at http://www.ukvisas.gov.uk (this web site was established jointly by the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Home Office to manage the UK's entry clearance [visa] operation).

By indicating the purpose of your intended visit to the UK ("Au Pair Scheme" in this case), the country of your nationality and the country in which you currently reside, you will be informed as to whether a visa is required. If so, you will be told which forms must be completed, information leaflets explaining the process and the nearest British Embassy, High Commision or Consulate(s) to which visa applications or queries should be addressed.

The UK Visa web site (above) is the best place to determine visa requirements. However, we do provide some information here which should prove useful:

EEC Member States

Aupairs who are nationals of any country included in the above can travel to any other member country without a visa.

Belgium & France

Aupairs must be between 16 and 30 years of age. The work permit and temporary residence permit cannot be longer than one year, and cannot be extended. A temporary residence of 3 months will be issued at the Consulate, which will be extended after registration of the aupair in Belgium. He/she must register at the Belgian Community within 8 days of arrival. For France the family will obtain the "Accord de placement aupair de stagiaire aide-familiale" and will send this to the aupair to obtain his/her visa.

Canada

There is no aupair program on offer, but aupairs can legally work in the country under the "Live-in Caregiver" Program.

This special program brings workers to Canada to do live-in work as caregivers when there are insufficient Canadians to fill the available positions. A "live-in caregiver" is someone who provides unsupervised care of children, the elderly or the disabled in a private household.

Successful applicants receive an employment authorisation allowing them to work in Canada as live-in caregivers. After two years employment program participants can apply in Canada to become permanent residents (they may be granted permanent resident status provided they meet certain requirements - Note: the two years of employment must be completed within three years of the caregiver's arrival in Canada).

Germany

Foreign aupairs must be at least 17 years old. If they are not from European Union EWR states then they must be under 25 years of age before requesting the visa. It is expected that the applicants have basic knowledge in the German colloquial language.

Foreign aupairs that are not citizens of a member state of the European union (EU) or the European marketing area (EWR) require a residence and a work permit for the Federal Republic of Germany. The residence permit must be requested before departure at the responsible German representation abroad (i.e. the embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany or a regionally responsible consulate) in the form of a visa. The entry visa requires the previous approval of the local authority for foreigners at the residence of the host family. The work permit is given on request by the locally responsible labour office. It presupposes the presence of a valid residence permit or their promise. Aupairs that are not citizens of the European Union/EWR states need a valid passport of their country of origin for the entry and for the duration of the stay intended. Citizens of the European Union/EWR member states need only have a valid identity card for the duration of their stay.

United Kingdom

Members of the commonwealth (i.e. Canada, Australia, South Africa, etc.) will need to obtain a holiday work visa, which is a straightforward procedure.

Nationals of the following countries can enter the UK on an aupair visa (maximum 2 years): Andorra, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Macedonia, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland and Turkey.

For all other nationalities (including US citizens) only a student visa can be obtained. Please contact Jobs In Demand Childcare for full details.

Switzerland

Applicants from any EEC States and North America (USA and Canada) are accepted.
