Information for Aupairs
In this section you will find
some information that should prove helpful, together with a
registration form and a selection of family vacancies (links are
provided below).
No agency fee is charged to an aupair placed in
the UK or Ireland. However, you are responsible for your own airfare
to and from the U.K. and must have either a return ticket or
sufficient funds to return home at the end of your stay in England.
You are also responsible for the cost of your language classes. You
should expect to pay £100+ per term (of approximately 10 weeks) for
a course of about 4 or 5 hours a week. All our families live near
language schools and are aware you need to study.
You can complete the registration form
on-line (a link is provided below). This will be submitted
to us for immediate processing. However, you will need to
send us a copy of the registration form (by post) together
with:
-
2 x Smiling Photographs,
-
a 'Dear Family' Letter,
-
2 x References and
-
a Health Certificate.
After a suitable family has been
found you will be sent their details and given the opportunity to
telephone them. If the family subsequently offers you an aupair
position, they will then send us your Letter of Invitation together
with some family photographs.
We will make sure that your agent
abroad receives the Letter of Invitation. You will then need to make
your travel arrangements and advise your chosen family where and
when you will be arriving. They will meet you on arrival.
If after sending your registration form you
change your mind and/or no longer need our services, please let us know as
soon as possible so that we do not send your details to any more families.
We hope you find your stay in England a rewarding
experience. Further information and helpful hints are provided below.

What is an aupair? An aupair is not
a domestic servant, but is typically a student who lives as part of an
English speaking family. He/she may help in the home for 5 hours per
day, 5 days per week, in return for own room, board and a minimum of
£50.00 per week pocket money. Suitable duties include light
housework, ironing, helping with preparing meals and childcare.
Please note that it is the responsibility of the family to assess
if an aupair is capable of having sole charge of the children.
Aupairs are not trained nannies. An aupair must be single, without
dependants, and between 17 and 27. The longest an aupair may stay in
the UK is 2 years.
What does an aupair from a non-EEC Country need to do? All aupairs
from Non-EEC countries need a Letter of Invitation from the host family,
offering them a position in their family. This may be needed to apply for a Visa
from the British Consulate before travelling to the UK. A fee will be charged for
this Visa. Alternatively, the aupair may be allowed to enter the UK with the
letter of Invitation and then register at the Aliens Registration
Department together with a fee of £34.00 within 2 weeks of arrival
in the UK. (10, Lambs Conduit Street, London WC1N 3NX Tel: (0044(0)
171 230 1208). It is not possible to arrive in the UK with a
visitor's visa and obtain an aupair visa after
arrival.

Is an aupair covered under
the NHS?
The National Health Service covers all aupairs. In the event of illness or
injury all Doctor's consultation fees are covered, although prescriptions would
have to be paid for - approximately £5.50 per item. In the event of
hospitalisation as a result of accident or illness, the National
Health Service will pay for all surgery, medical care, drugs and
food. The aupair should register with the family's Doctor soon after
arrival. Dental care in the UK is only partially covered by the
National Health Service, and as some dentists only offer private
care, aupairs are advised to take out private insurance for
this.
What travel arrangements
does an aupair need to make? An aupair
is responsible for his/her own fare to and from the UK, to the
family's nearest airport or London Railway Station or Coach
Terminal, where the family is expected to meet him/her. An aupair
must have an open return ticket home or sufficient funds to
return home in the event of difficulties.
How can a prospective aupair determine their visa
requirements? Jobs In Demand Childcare has prepared a
short page (via the link below) to help a prospective aupair
determine what visa requirements are necessary for the UK.
